Dealership Marketing Benchmarks 2026: The Numbers Worth Knowing
This page collects the benchmarks we use in planning and reporting for dealership clients, with the source and date for each. It is updated quarterly; the figures below are current as of late September 2026. Where a number is our own arithmetic on a published figure, it says so. Where no reliable public figure exists, we say that too rather than fill the gap with a vendor's guess.
Advertising spend
| Benchmark | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Total franchised dealer ad spend, 2025 | $9.96 billion, a record, up 8.0% from $9.22 billion in 2024 | NADA Data 2025 (May 2026) |
| Average ad spend per dealership, 2025 | $586,246 | NADA Data 2025 |
| Ad spend per new vehicle retailed, 2025 | $739, up from $705 in 2024 and $708 in 2023 | NADA Data 2025 |
| Advertising as a share of dealership revenue, 2025 | 0.77%, down from 1.00% in 2015 | NADA Data 2025 |
| Ad spend per retail unit, new and used, Q2 2026 | $406, up 2.8% year over year | Presidio-NCM Q2 2026 |
| Digital share of dealer ad budgets, 2025 | 74.9% | NADA Data 2025 |
| Franchised dealerships in the U.S., 2025 | 16,990 | NADA Data 2025 |
| New vehicles retailed per dealership, 2025 | 955 | NADA Data 2025 |
Budget mix by channel, 2025 (NADA): search 21.1%, third-party listings 20.0%, SEO and website 19.5%, social 14.2%, TV 10.5%, radio 6.9%, direct mail 5.6%, newspaper 2.1%. The full table and a method for allocating are in dealership advertising budget allocation by channel.
Cost per lead and cost per click
| Channel | CTR | CPC | Conversion rate | Cost per lead | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google search, automotive for sale | 8.28% | $2.27 | 6.01% | $44.26 | WordStream 2026 (13,474 campaigns, Apr 2025 to Mar 2026) |
| Google search, automotive service and parts | 5.56% | $4.35 | 15.51% | $29.96 | WordStream 2026 |
| Google search, automotive for sale, prior year | 8.29% | $2.41 | 7.76% | $38.86 | WordStream 2025 |
| Meta lead campaigns, automotive for sale | 2.29% | $2.01 | 4.15% | $35.52 | WordStream 2026 (small sample) |
| CarGurus, dealer-reported | under $40 in a healthy account | Practitioner benchmark, DealerRefresh 2024 | |||
| Cars.com, dealer-reported | under $50 in a healthy account | Practitioner benchmark, DealerRefresh 2024 |
Note the direction of the Google figures: cost per lead up 13.9% and conversion rate down 22.6% in a year. Fewer, more expensive clicks that convert less often is consistent with AI Overviews taking the informational searches and leaving the transactional ones.
We do not publish cost-per-sale ranges for listing sites. The figures that circulate online ($8,000 to $12,000 per sale for some marketplaces) come from vendor blogs with no methodology and should not be used in a plan.
Lead close rates and lead handling
| Benchmark | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Internet lead close rate, 30 days | 6% (16% buy from a competitor) | Urban Science, Nov 2025 |
| Phone lead close rate, 30 days | 14% (16% defect) | Urban Science, Nov 2025 |
| Showroom lead close rate, 30 days | 25% (20% defect) | Urban Science, Nov 2025 |
| Leads that buy from the dealer they contacted | About 1 in 3 of leads that buy anywhere | Urban Science, Oct 2025 |
| Sales leads that resulted in a purchase, 2025 | 11.7%, up from 10.2% | Foureyes 2026 benchmarks (22,900+ dealer sites) |
| Lead-attributed sales that close within 3 days | About 75% (used 77.2%, new 69.5%) | Foureyes, July 2025 |
| Qualified leads mishandled | 42.7% | Foureyes 2026 benchmarks |
| Leads never logged to the CRM | 15.2% | Foureyes 2026 benchmarks |
| Vehicle sales with no CRM lead attached | 92% of 875,000 sales sampled | Cox Automotive and Autotrader, July 2025 |
| Average time in market, new-vehicle buyer | About 95 days | Cox Automotive, 2025 |
| Total shopping time, of which online | 13 hours 49 minutes, 7 hours 11 minutes online | Cox Car Buyer Journey 2025 |
| Shoppers who used third-party sites, dealer sites, AI tools | 75%, 59%, 19% | Cox Car Buyer Journey 2025 |
The 92% figure is the one that should reshape reporting. If nine in ten sales never touch a lead form, a report built on leads is describing a tenth of the business.
Gross profit per unit
| Benchmark | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Gross per new vehicle, average dealership | $1,840, down 13.5% year over year | Presidio-NCM Q2 2026 |
| Gross per used vehicle, average dealership | $1,409, down 10.0% | Presidio-NCM Q2 2026 |
| F&I per retail unit, average dealership | $1,769, up 4.8% | Presidio-NCM Q2 2026 |
| Net pretax profit, average dealership | Down 11.8% year over year in Q2 2026; full-year 2025 was up 6.3% | Presidio-NCM Q2 2026 and Q4 2025 |
| Pretax income per store, public dealer groups, trailing 12 months | $3.9 million, down 4.2% from 2025 and 43% below the 2022 peak | Haig Report Q2 2026 (Sept 2026) |
| New GPU, Lithia | $2,718 | Q2 2026 earnings call |
| New GPU, AutoNation | $2,381, down from $2,785 | Q2 2026 earnings call |
| Used GPU, Lithia | $2,019 | Q2 2026 earnings call |
Public groups run higher per-unit gross than the average private store, so use Presidio-NCM for a typical franchise point and the public figures as an upper bound. The planning implication: front and back gross on an average new unit is roughly $3,600. Any advertising channel that cannot deliver an incremental unit for less than that is losing money on that unit before the service relationship.
The market: SAAR, prices, incentives
| Benchmark | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| New light-vehicle sales, 2025 | 16.2 million, highest since 2019 | NADA Data 2025 |
| SAAR, August 2026 | 16.8 million, up 1.6% year over year; fleet share 15.5% | Cox Automotive, Sept 8, 2026 |

| Average transaction price, August 2026 | $50,089, up 1.9% year over year; MSRP $51,852 | Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book, Sept 2026 |
| Incentives as a share of ATP, August 2026 | 6.5%, third straight monthly decline, down 7.3% year over year | Cox Automotive, Sept 2026 |
| Average incentive per unit, September 2026 | $3,574, 6.9% of MSRP, up 7.3% year over year | J.D. Power and GlobalData, Sept 2026 |
| Average monthly payment, September 2026 | $821, a record for the month; average rate 6.66% | J.D. Power and GlobalData, Sept 2026 |
| Loans of 84 months or longer | 13.9% of retail transactions | J.D. Power and GlobalData, Sept 2026 |
| Trade-ins with negative equity | 29.4% | J.D. Power and GlobalData, Sept 2026 |
| EV share of retail sales, September 2026 | 7.9%, down 6.5 points year over year after the federal credit expired Sept 30, 2025 | J.D. Power and GlobalData, Sept 2026 |
| Hybrid share of retail sales | 17.0% | J.D. Power and GlobalData, Sept 2026 |
| Tariff cost per vehicle, 2025 estimate | $2,000 to $2,300 | Digital Dealer tariff tracker, May 2026 |
Cox and J.D. Power compute transaction price differently (Cox includes all sales, J.D. Power is retail only), which is why one reads about $50,000 and the other about $46,000. Cite one consistently.
Seasonality
Mercer Capital's analysis of monthly sales from 2015 to 2025 finds November and December the strongest combined period, January and February the weakest, a March to April recovery tied to tax refunds, a strong July and August, and a September spike around Labor Day and model-year closeouts that needs to be normalized in any year-over-year comparison. The pattern held across the whole decade.
Tax season is the used-vehicle event of the year. In February 2026 the average federal refund was just over $3,700, up 10.6%, and used retail sales ran 5.5% ahead of February 2025 while days' supply fell to 42 (Cox Automotive).
Deal density also follows the calendar. An iSeeCars analysis found December carries 38% more used-vehicle price cuts than an average month and January about 20% more, while May carries 28% fewer. Veterans Day, Black Friday, and New Year's Eve are the heaviest single days.
Trade area sizing
Most franchised dealers draw the majority of retail sales from within 10 to 20 miles. Manufacturers assign a Primary Market Area (or APR, or AOI) built from census tracts or ZIP codes nearest the store, and measure sales effectiveness as actual sales divided by expected sales, where expected sales are the brand's regional share applied to registrations in the territory. A score of 100 means the store matches the brand's regional penetration in its own backyard; by construction, about half the dealer network is below 100 at any time.

Questions dealers ask
What is a good cost per lead for a car dealership?
For Google search, the 2026 median for automotive sales campaigns is $44.26 (WordStream). For Meta lead campaigns it is $35.52. A good cost per lead is the one that produces an acceptable cost per sale after applying the channel's close rate, which is 6% for internet leads and 14% for phone leads on an industry basis (Urban Science). A cheap lead from a source that closes at 3% is an expensive sale.
What is a good close rate on internet leads?
Six percent within 30 days is the 2025 industry figure from Urban Science's registration-matched data; Foureyes measures 11.7% of sales leads across all sources resulting in a purchase. Stores with strong lead handling run well above both, and 42.7% of qualified leads are mishandled on average, so process is usually the bigger lever than media.
What is the average gross profit per car for a dealership in 2026?
For the average franchised store in Q2 2026, $1,840 on a new vehicle and $1,409 on a used vehicle, plus $1,769 in F&I per retail unit (Presidio-NCM). Public dealer groups report higher: Lithia's new GPU was $2,718 in the same quarter.
